Barceloneta is Barcelona’s popular seaside neighbourhood, famous for its long stretch of sandy beach, array of delicious seafood and paella restaurants, traditional old-school tapas bars and it’s overall fun and lively vibe.
The area is defined as the triangular bit of land that has Barcelona’s Port Vell on one side and sandy beaches on the other. The small, charming streets that join the two edges are also filled with local hot spots, often overlooked by tourists in favour of the seaside.
Easily reached by car, metro, bus or on foot, it’s easy to spend an entire day enjoying the best of what Barceloneta has to offer. Whether you want to lie on the beach or go for a swim, play some beach volleyball or eat your own weight in delicious Catalan and Spanish food. You can even enjoy a drink at a sandy beach bar or walk/cycle/rollerblade along the promenade. There’s no way you’ll get bored!

When to visit Barceloneta
Barceloneta is based around the beach and most venues have big outdoor terraces and beach bars on the sand. This makes Barceloneta ideal to see when it’s warm and sunny, to really make the most of it. The bars are also alive and buzzing on a warm summer’s night.
How long is needed to visit Barceloneta
You’ll need at least three hours to enjoy the best of what Barceloneta has to offer. However, if you’re heading to the beach then you can also easily spend an entire day in the area! Stroll along the lively sidewalk, read a book on the sand, go for a dip and try out some of the best local bars and restaurants in the area.
What should I wear to visit Barceloneta
Everything goes in Barceloneta! If you’re visiting for the day to enjoy the seaside then you should just dress comfortably. If you’re out for some dinner and drinks in the evening, you can make a little more effort but there’s still no need to get glam Don’t forget that Barceloneta has a beautiful stretch of beach, so pack your bathers and a towel!
What is there to see in Barceloneta
Beach
Barceloneta is most famous for its beaches. They’re the main beaches in Barcelona and the most popular too. The area actually has four beaches in total. Sant Sebastià beach is the first and closest to the iconic W Barcelona hotel. Then you’ll find Barceloneta beach whose wide stretch of sand is filled with beach volleyball courts, beach bars, swimmers and sunbathers. Further along you’ll find the popular Sant Miquel beach followed by Somorrostro at the end.
Port Vell
Port Vell is the old port of Barcelona. Today, it’s a splendid place for a romantic walk along the water’s edge. See the impressive yachts parked in the port and enjoy a meal at one of the many restaurants. If you’re in the mood for some learning, pop into the Museum of Catalan History or head over to the city’s aquarium.
Views of Barcelona
If you want to see some truly breathtaking and unique views of Barcelona, catch the cable car from La Barceloneta to the hill of Montjuïc. You’ll find a cable car stop on the beach of Sant Sebastià. It’s a fun and different way of travelling around the city, and there’s plenty of things to see and do in Montjuïc too! Not to mention even more views…
