Historically you used to be hard come by to find a decent place to eat in London. Even just a decade ago, London was known for its less-than-great cuisine options. How things have changed!
London food has been completely regenerated and the city is now regarded as one of the best foodie cities in the world. Standing alongside the likes of New York, Paris and Tokyo, London’s restaurant tourism is booming.
What really makes London’s food stand out from the rest is its diversity. In the same way that London is a melting pot of cultures, this really comes through in its food offering. Vietnamese, Turkish, Japanese, Italian, Indian, Peruvian, Spanish and Sri Lankan are just some of the cuisines that London’s top restaurants are serving.
This new-found popularity does have its downfalls. With many new restaurants not accepting reservations, queueing for food has become a regular occurance. Don’t let that put you off heading to the hottest restaurants in town though – they’ll be worth the wait!
So if you’re looking for what to eat in London, read on to find out where the locals are eating (and queuing) for their favourite meals.

What is the best food not to miss in London
A Full English breakfast
You can’t come to the UK and not try a world-famous Full English Breakfast – eggs, sausages and bacon. To get an authentic and traditional fry-up, try your nearest local ‘caf’ like the Regency cafe, or the Breakfast Club. For a more modern take on the Full English, try Caravan, Ozone of Friends of Ours. They blend a traditional English fry-up with a more antipodean style brunch.
London’s Street Food
Home to some world renowned food markets, no trip to London is complete without a visit to at least one. Borough Market is the biggest and most famous, nestled into the bottom of London Bridge. Broadway market on Saturdays is the place to be in East London, or you can try Brick Lane on Sundays. Camden and Maltby Street markets will also have you drooling as you wander through.
A traditional Sunday roast
On Sundays there’s only one type of meal you should be thinking about in London. It’s the aptly named Sunday Roast. This traditional British meal includes roasted meat, roast potato, Yorkshire pudding, stuffing, vegetables and gravy. Head straight to your local pub for a taste. Some local favourites for a Sunday roast include The Marksman, Princess of Shoreditch, The Albion and The Duke of Wellington.

In the afternoons, this coffee shop turns into a popular cocktail bar. Try their famous Espresso Martini! Their late night venue can be found under Clerkenwell Grind and it’s open until 2am.
Gordon’s Wine Bar
Established in 1890, this is thought to be London’s oldest wine bar. Considered a London institution, this bar is popular with locals and tourists alike. Grab a table in the underground cave, or if it’s a nice day then pull up a chair outside. This historic wine bar also serves some delicious cheese boards and snacks.
The Breakfast Club
For something a little more quirky, The Breakfast Club in Spitalfields is the place to go. When you enter, you must ask to see the Mayor of Scaredy Cat Town. You’ll promptly be shown through a fridge door where you’ll climb through into a hidden underground cocktail bar.
