웨스트민스터는 영국 정부가 위치할 뿐만 아니라 런던을 탐험하기에 훌륭한 베이스이기도 합니다. 웨스트민스터는 런던에서 가장 많은 수의 명소들이 밀집되어 있는 곳으로 따라서 관광객들에게는 놀라울 정도로 인기가 많은 반면 런더너들은 피하는 지역이기도 하지요. 조금만 걸어가면 웨스트민스터 사원, 빅벤, 영국 국회의사당, 다우닝 스트리트(Downing Street)그리고 버킹엄 궁전에도 갈 수 있답니다.
버킹엄 궁전 앞에 위치하고 있는 세인트제임스 공원은 런던 시내에 자리잡은 훌륭한 녹지공간으로 여름이면 너도나도 의자를 펴고 앉아 햇볓을 즐기며 날씨를 만끽하는 사람들로 가득찬답니다. 이 공원에서 보이는 강가와 궁전의 훌륭한 경치로 인해 달리기를 즐기는 사람들에게도 인기 만점인 공원이지요. 그리고 세인트제임스 공원을 가로질러 걸어가면 런던 최대 공원인 하이드파크(Hyde Park)에도 닿을 수 있습니다.
또한 템즈강을 따라 걸어가면 빅벤 시계탑의 장엄한 경관과 영국 국회의사당을 볼 수 있는데요. 비록 이 지역의 대부분 구역이 정부 관계자들에게만 출입이 제한되어있지만, 그래도 웨스트민스터에는 볼거리와 할거리가 많이 있답니다. 무엇보다도 런던에서 가장 사진이 예쁘게 나오는 곳이지요!

웨스트민스터 언제갈까?
세인트제임스 공원의 러블리한 녹지공간으로 말미암아 따뜻한 계절에 가는 것이 아무래도 더 좋긴합니다. 하지만 워낙에 인기가 많은 지역이므로 매우 붐빌 수도 있으므로 너무 많은 사람에 치이는 것을 피하고 싶다면 이름 아침이나 추운 계절에 가는 것을 추천합니다.
웨스트민스터 돌아보려면 몇시간?
웨스트민스터에는 볼거리가 아주아주 많기 때문에 적어도 하루의 반나절 정도는 예상하셔야합니다. 버스나 지하철을 타고 다닐 수도 있긴하지만 (날씨만 허락한다면) 한 걸음 한 걸음 즐기면서 주변을 만끽하며 걷는 것이 더 좋답니다. 그러니 산책을 위한 시간도 살짝 할당해주세요.

근위병 교대식 (The Changing the Guard ceremony)
버킹엄 궁전 밖에서 열리는 유명한 근위병 교대식은 절대 놓치지 마세요. 이 교대식은 근위병의 교체가 이루어지는 이틀마다 궁전 밖에서 진행되는데요. 교대식 시작은 아침 10시 45분이지만 실제로 교대가 일어나는 시점은 11시이며, 약 45분정도 소요된답니다. 관람은 무료이며, 현재는 날씨가 허락하면 매주 월요일, 수요일, 금요일, 일요일에 열리고 있습니다.
웨스트민스터 사원 (Westminster Abbey)
웨스트민스터 애비는 700년의 오랜 역사를 가진 수도원으로 왕실 대관식 및 결혼식부터 역사적으로 유명한 인물들의 안식처로 영국에서 가장 잘 알려진 종교적인 곳 중 하나랍니다. 1997년도 다이애나 왕비의 장례식도, 2011년도 윌리엄 왕자와 케이트 미들턴의 결혼식도 이 곳에서 열렸지요. 웨스트민스터 애비는 보통 월요일~토요일에, 1년 내내 대중에게 방문이 허락됩니다.
버킹엄 궁전 (Buckingham Palace)
버킹엄 궁전의 장엄한 State Room은 1년 중에서도 여름 단 10주동안만 방문이 허락되는데요. 궁전 안이 어떻게 생겼는지 구경해 볼 수 있는 훌륭한 기회입니다. 궁전의 State Room은 일종의 라운지로 여왕이 손님들을 대접하고, 의례행사나 공식행사등을 진행하는 곳인데요. 총 19개의 State Room 이 있으며 표를 미리 구매해야 방문할 수 있으니 참고하세요.
How to get to Westminster
Access Westminster by train and bus
Westminster is easily reached by London’s Underground Network (the Tube). Westminster station on the Jubilee, Circle and District lines will take you right into the centre of Westminster, or St James’s Park station is just a short walk through the park, on the same lines. The area can also be reached from Embankment, which is on the Northern line (Charring Cross branch), Bakerloo, Circle and District lines.

Westminster is easily accessible from London’s biggest airport – Heathrow, which you can reach by taxi in around 45 minutes, or on the tube in approximately 50 minutes. Street parking aronud Westminster is limited to permit holders, however, there are some paid car parks in the vicinity. Try Abingdon Street Car Park, ParkBee Westminster or Q-Park Trafalgar.
